Directing our Academy: an interview with BMA board member Janet Sweeney

How did you become involved in BMA?

“I was recruited by our dynamic BMA president, HoldaRedekopp. I had never heard of El Sistema,  but Holda’s  passion and enthusiasm for the power of music to improve children’s lives was irresistible, and the more I learned about El Sistema and the many programs worldwide, and then saw the proof in our very own students progress I was hooked.”

Why do you think this program is important?

The  BMA program offers deserving children an opportunity to receive excellent musical training at no cost, who would otherwise not be able to afford it. There are many studies that show a positive link between music instruction and improved academic and social skills. Our program also instills the value of teamwork and exploration of each individuals’ creative potential.

What role has music played in your life?

The amazing influence of music, both as a performer and listener, has greatly enriched my entire life. As a shy young person it gave me confidence to share my love of music with others, and in later life expanded my horizons on many levels.  As a former English teacher I have also seen the benefits of music, and the Arts in general, in improved connections to language and reasoning, and facilitation of emotional development. The joy of making music as a singer and later the collaborative creativity as a choral director has been a constant delight to me. It has enabled me to teach and hopefully inspire musicians and audiences to understand and enjoy the beauty of music and it’s benefits. I can wholeheartedly agree with the founder of El Sistema, Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, who said, “Teach children the beauty of music, and music will teach them the beauty of life.”

What kind of growth have you seen in BMA students?

With each BMA recital since 2014, I have been truly astounded by the improvement in students poise, enthusiasm and musical abilities. The excellent organization of the program, the caring volunteers, and the commitment of teaching and administrative staff to each student has been an inspiration. This quote from a parent with three children in the program sums up their experience: BMA has “taught them to be positive, focused and given them confidence to try new things. More importantly they have learned compassion, leadership, commitment and have developed a deep love of music.”
