We’re going to be drumming in some summer fun in July 2022!
Check out our events page! Our board approved our first-ever summer music day camp – thanks to our generous donors who have continued to support our mission to offer more Abbotsford kids access to professional music lessons.
Bakerview Music Academy has *** limited *** spaces available for our one-week summer camp. We’re asking for $20 as the fee for the entire week to mitigate people who book and do not show (that happened at spring break). We’re also fully willing to waive the fee for any family for whom that would be hardship. Right now we have space for approximately 30 students.
BMA staff and volunteers are fully background checked. We have been proud to teach many Dormick Park, Ten Broeck, Godson, Alexander, Abby Middle, and Abby Senior students since BMA began in 2013. All of these schools have been emailed about this opportunity.
In 2016, BMA was selected as the recipient for the Abbotsford Board of Education’s annual Community Matters Award. In 2020, BMA won the Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Award for Innovative Initiative – Small & Medium Organizations.
This past spring, one of our students was filmed as part of a FASD video for the Abbotsford School District and they filmed her at our academy. Watch for news of this next fall! Music is an important way to boost academic and social learning for all students, including those with diverse learning needs.
Inspired by the revolutionary El Sistema program in Venezuela, the goal of Bakerview Music Academy is to inspire Abbotsford youth to achieve their full potential and to have a positive impact on their lives and society as a whole. Our program empowers youth while developing talented musicians who get to experience the joy of performing. They learn and practice together in group classes, building their skills and finding success through discipline, hard work, and a team effort.
A recent study of the impact of an El Sistema after-school orchestral music program in Manitoba found that children enrolled performed better academically and socially after two years of music. Researchers also found:
The program has significantly impacted family pride and their sense of validation. Family relationships are improving; familial members feel more connected through music which is calming and stress reducing. Children and their families have sustained, numerous opportunities to form new friendships; they mix and interact socially through concerts and special events. Families with children in the orchestra are experiencing an increased sense of inclusion within the school community and some are now volunteering. Effective, caring relationships have developed between music teachers, participants, and their families.
