Join us May 1st for the 2022 Choose Joy Run & Walkathon To Support BMA in Memory of Beth Nickel

You’re invited to join us for our annual fundraising run & walkathon at Mill Lake in Abbotsford on Sunday, May 1, 2022. Participants are welcome to walk, run, or bike around beautiful Mill Lake. According to Google, one loop around the lake is 2 km.

Don’t feel like coming out? That’s okay! You can also join our walkathon virtually. Walk anytime in April before May 1st, record your progress, raise some money, take some photos, and send in your pledges. 

HOW YOUR PARTICIPATION HELPS BAKERVIEW MUSIC ACADEMY

Since 2013, Bakerview Music Academy has given Fraser Valley youth access to professional after-school El Sistema music lessons, with priority given to children from low-income, single-parent, and large families. Admission to BMA is very inclusive and open to all Abbotsford students – there is no audition process. We have children who are new to Canada and many who are Canadian by birth but representative of a wide variety of cultures.

Countless studies demonstrate that children who take music lessons perform better academically and socially. Often cost is a barrier and typically lower income families would not have access to classical music studies. We are proud that BMA levels the playing field.

Beth Nickel led the string program at Bakerview Music Academy (BMA) for six years and was a kind, encouraging, and wise influence in the lives of our many students. She was greatly loved and is deeply missed! During her treatment for cancer, Beth said she would choose joy each day. Join us to choose joy and remember Mrs. Beth’s love for music and her community by raising money to support BMA.

Our mission is to nurture and develop Abbotsford kids by making music together. In addition to giving students from all backgrounds the wonderful gift of making music in a safe space, we also empower our students as they learn self-expression, achievement, teamwork, and leadership. Every year, BMA participates in local events so that our students learn the benefits of giving back to the community.

Whether you join our fundraiser or simply donate to BMA, your support matters to us and we are grateful for everyone who helps us to empower Fraser Valley youth.

Uncomfortable asking others to support you? Make a donation of $25 to cover your entry.

Join us at the Emerson Street entrance (Shelter #3 – the small shelter not far from the water park walking toward Bevan Avenue) to Mill Lake Park on May 1st from 1 to 4 pm.

Check in with our staff & volunteers, then walk, run, or cycle around the park.

Join us afterwards for some fun! We will have a draw for participants and a few prizes. And music!

Set a walking goal for yourself in April and try your best to complete it by May 1st! 

Take a picture of yourself during your walk(s) and email us so we can share the love and support of BMA in memory of Beth to our social media. Note: Each virtual participant who emails a photo to info@bakerviewmusic.ca will be entered into a draw!

Drop off your pledges to us at Mill Lake on May 1st between 1 to 4 pm or drop them off at our office on Tuesday or Thursday academy days up to May 3 between 2:30 – 5:15 pm. We have a big Bakerview Music Academy banner beside the entrance to the facilities we rent from Bakerview Church at 2285 Clearbrook Road. If that doesn’t work, contact us and we’ll sort it out with you! As long as every donor’s name and contact info is accurate and complete, we can issue them a tax receipt for donations of at least $20.
