DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a beautiful night of choral and orchestral music by our talented Sistema students! \nThis evening will feature a work by Elder Mary Fontaine called “Kinan’askom’tinan.” This means\, “we honour or praise you for the arts”–  that is why we sing\, we pray\, and we dance. \nThis beautiful and mindful song has\, with the permission of Elder Mary\, been arranged especially for us by Juno-nominated composer Timothy Corlis. We were able to undertake this project with the support of a SiriusXM Canada and MusiCounts grant that our dedicated Board Member Nicole Farrington spear-headed for us.

DESCRIPTION:We’re going to be walking at Mill Lake from 2-4 pm on April 29th in memory of our beloved viola teaching artist Mrs. Beth Nickel (pictured below in her home studio) to raise funds in support of our music academy again this year. We’ve booked the big picnic shelter at the Bevan Avenue entrance to Mill Lake Park. \n \nEarlier this month\, our students took home printed paper walkathon pledge forms and an envelope for collecting money and/or cheques. For many of our families\, this works best. \nSome participants prefer to manage donations online\, and you’ll find that some of our BMA students are registered as walkathon participants online here. If you click on a registered participant’s profile\, you can pledge your support and make a donation. \nEvery dollar raised will fund our program and benefit our students directly.  \nThere are a few ways you can support our Choose Joy Walkathon: \n\nMake a donation or pledge to support one of our BMA students registered on the online platform here.\nMake a general donation to the music academy on the online platform here.\nCome and join us for the walkathon! Register as a participant by either paying a flat rate of $25 or collecting pledges from family & friends. (If you aren’t able to join us in-person on April 29\, you can also walk on your own before that date and drop off your donations.)\nDonate prizes for walkathon participants. We will enter every participant’s name into a draw\, so things like gift cards or treats are welcome.\nMail a cheque and indicate that you are supporting the Choose Joy Walkathon 2023.\nShare the registration page for Choose Joy Walkathon to social media to encourage family and friends to come out and walk with us on April 29th — or to donate to support participants raising funds for our nonprofit music academy. Thanks to our generous donors\, this day camp is heavily subsidized and costs just $20 for each student (grades 3 – 12 welcome). A healthy lunch & snack will be provided. \nJuly 18-22\, 2022 \nDoors will open for drop off at 9:00 am \nClasses will begin at 9:30 am sharp \nPick up between 2:30-2:45 pm \nLocation: 2285 Clearbrook Road (look for our banner) \nCost $20 per student (if this is a hardship\, please reach out to us) \nThere will be four one-hour classes\, a 45-minute lunch\, and a couple of quick restroom breaks. Students will play different types of drums and enjoy choir & other arts activities. \nBMA is open to all Abbotsford youth but we give priority to students from low-income and single-parent families. Admission to BMA is very inclusive and open to all Abbotsford students – there is no audition process. We have children who are new to Canada and many who are Canadian by birth but representative of a wide variety of cultures. \nCountless studies demonstrate that children who take music lessons perform better academically and socially. Often cost is a barrier and typically lower income families would not have access to classical music studies. We are proud that BMA levels the playing field. \nBeth Nickel led the string program at Bakerview Music Academy (BMA) for six years and was a kind\, encouraging\, and wise influence in the lives of our many students. She was greatly loved and is deeply missed! During her treatment for cancer\, Beth said she would choose joy each day. Join us to choose joy and remember Mrs. Beth’s love for music and her community by raising money to support BMA. \nOur mission is to nurture and develop Abbotsford kids by making music together.
